I am a retired art teacher. When I was younger, I thought all painting was plein air. Teaching modified that. My studio space is at table rock where I never tire of painting my waterfall.

An Exploration of Creation… “In the beginning God created.” The very first words of the story of creation, and through these foundational words my perspective on our world is illuminated. My paintings serve as a reflection of this profound connection, an overflow of love and reverence for the intricate beauty that surrounds us. Through my art, I seek to capture the essence of the natural world – its colors, its textures, its rhythms – inviting others to share in the wonder of creation and to find solace and inspiration in its timeless embrace.

Don Sturdivant

Art has been a lifelong passion for Don Sturdivant, sparked by a cherished childhood gift— a John Gnagy artist kit. Though he pursued a 20-year career in the Coast Guard followed by another two decades in information technology, his love for art never faded. Throughout his travels, he captured the beauty of the natural world... always intending to translate those moments onto canvas. In retirement, he has fully embraced his artistic journey, studying with renowned artists such as Bob Rankin, Dan Nelson, Sterling Edwards, and Helen Beacham.

As a painter, I am inspired by the experience of creating art and recreating memories. I love to explore both light and shapes through representative and more abstract landscapes and the occasional still life.

I’ve always had a love affair with art, from a choreographed still life to a luminous landscape. The possibilities are endless. Having studied with many wonderful and gifted painters in the U.S. including Botanical Art at the Corcoran College of Art & Design in Washington, DC., I’ve embraced a spectrum of genres. Living abroad early on and blessed to travel from Europe to Asia Minor, as well as our beautiful America, I’ve been influenced by exotic cultures and inspiring vistas. I’m forever grateful for my artful journey. Greenville, SC has been home since relocating from Virginia. Watercolor and oils are my preferred mediums.

As an intuitive painter, my work is a reflection of the physical, emotional, and spiritual environments I experience. Each painting begins in a place of energy and chaos, drawn from the moment’s intensity. From there, I embark on a journey to calm and organize that energy, allowing my emotions to guide the process.

Painting is a passion. Plein air painting allows me to not only capture what I see but also what I feel. Being out in nature unleashes the wonders of painting and capturing its essence as I see it.

I began Plein air painting in 2022 just after the pandemic. With the help of video instruction, attending workshops, and encouragement from my supportive and loving family, I’ve found plein air painting to be my new passion. With our kids in college, there’s a little more time now to explore this new interest. Gods creation is my inspiration. I love painting His beautiful world. I’m hoping someone will see my paintings and know God loves us. Some of the evidence is just outside our door!
